Our population is growing rapidly and traditional sources of nutrition have been overexploited and depleted to the point where it is imperative to explore and find new sources that will nourish us and the future generations to come without destroying the planet, but rather helping to balance ecosystems and biodiversity.
Vision
The ocean has vast untapped potential. Algae are an incredibly diverse and nutrient-rich resource that has been underutilised. While seaweed has been consumed in Asia and Europe for centuries, its commercial potential remains largely unexplored.
At Poseidona, we’re harnessing this potential by developing protein ingredients from seaweed sidestreams, such as those from the agar industry, and invasive algae—a solution that not only provides nourishment, but also helps restore marine ecosystems.
Our processing technology, which we’re currently in the process of patenting, enables us to produce high-quality ingredients from these resources.
Impact
Poseidona ingredients are nutritious, affordable and convenient for food product manufacturers and have a significantly reduced environmental impact.
Land-grown food ingredients generally have much higher water consumption and soil nutrient depletion, generate more greenhouse gas emissions, and require fertilisers, antibiotics, fungicides and pesticides.
In many cases they also represent a threat to biodiversity and are associated with deforestation due to monoculture.

Maria Cermeño is our Chief Scientific Officer. After obtaining her PhD, she spent several years as a postdoctoral food biochemist working on protein extraction from circular food materials and on the technofunctional improvement of plant proteins for dairy-free products.
Sònia Hurtado, our CEO, has a strong entrepreneurial DNA and has become a trailblazer for the plant-based sector. With +20 years of experience as a food scientist, specialising in alternative proteins, she is the former co-founder and CSO of Current Foods Inc., advisor to global leading plant-based products’ companies with a clear mission that drives her career.
