Our population is growing fast and traditional nutrient sources have been overexploited and exhausted to a point where it is imperative to explore and find new sources that will nourish us and the generations to come without destroying the planet, but rather helping to balance ecosystems and biodiversity.
Vision
The ocean holds vast untapped potential. Algae is an incredibly diverse and nutrient-rich resource that has been underutilised. While seaweed has been consumed for centuries in the places likes of Asia and Europe, its commercial potential remains largely unexplored.
At Poseidona, we’re harnessing this potential by developing protein ingredients from seaweed sidestreams, from the agar industry for example, and invasive algae—a solution that not only provides nourishesmet but also helps restore ocean ecosystems.
Our processing technology, which we’re currently in the process of patenting, enables us to create high-quality ingredients from these resources.
Impact
Poseidona ingredients are nutrient packed, affordable and convenient for food product manufacturers and have a substantially reduced impact in the environment.
Land grown food ingredients in general show a much higher water consumption and exhaustion of the lands’ nutrients, generating more greenhouse emissions and requiring fertilisers, antibiotics, fungicides and pesticides.
In many cases they also represent a hazard for biodiversity and are related to deforestation due to monocultivation.
At Poseidona we are combining responsible blue economy with circular economy, contributing towards the reuse of resources and at the same time contributing towards restoring the ocean’s ecosystems.

Maria Cermeño is our Chief Scientific Officer. After concluding her PhD, she did her postdoctoral studies as a food science biochemist in protein extraction from circular food materials for several years and worked in plant based protein technofunctional improvement for dairy-free products.
Sònia Hurtado, our CEO, possesses a strong entrepreneurial DNAl and has become a trail blazer for the plant-based sector. With +20 years of experience as a food scientist, specialising in alternative proteins, she is the former cofounder and CSO at Current Foods Inc., advisor at global leading plant-based products’ companies with a clear mission that drives her career.
